The suburb is named after Rippon Lea Estate once owned by entreperneur  Frederick Sargood . The original mansion remains in Hotham st with its surrounding grounds and is owned and operated by the National Trust for tours, functions , theatre performances , picnics and horticulture in the grounds .Following Sargoods death in 1903  some of his property was subdivided to form the current suburb of Ripponlea.

In  1909, Caulfield Grammar established its  Senior School in the suburb

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation‘s Ripponlea television studios were built in 1954 on land compulsorily acquired from the Rippon Lea Estate by the Victorian State government.
